On November 1, Chef Michael Gavala will lead the SBDAC’s inaugural Cooking for the Arts.

Fresh from the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center’s (SBDAC) brand new Culinary Arts department comes an opportunity as wonderfully unique as the event itself, Cooking for the Arts!

Cooking for the Arts is an interactive culinary fundraiser for SBDAC’s Eclectic Education program.  The exciting interactive dinner experience is a medley of excellence with a few twists.

“We are very excited at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center to add the culinary arts to our programming with a new state-of-the-art kitchen,” says Jim Griffith, CEO of the SBDAC.  “We have several exciting culinary events scheduled for this coming season and Chef Michael Gavala with G3 Catering will add a tremendous dynamic to everything we do.”

Chef Gavala was born and raised in the food industry.  He attended the Culinary Institute of America and has had extensive experience in the food service industry for more than 25 years.

The inaugural Cooking for the Arts event is scheduled for November 1st.  It is a high-end cooking class led by the SBDAC Executive Chef Gavala, instructing guests on how to prepare a four course gourmet dinner experience.

Gavala explained that for this initial event it was important to go back to his roots.  Inspired by a classic Italian background, the Chef will walk guests seated at tables of eight, surrounded by good friends and great ingredients, through the creation of each gourmet course.

“I have a heavy culinary Italian background and I wanted to share with guests fare that I am knowledgeable and well-versed in,” Chef Gavala explains.  “The menu boasts of flavorful and enticing options such as mixed greens with slivered pears and crispy prosciutto, butternut squash ravioli and flaming Italian apples over Panacotta.  But the true excitement is in the highly interactive environment the event will have.”

The idea is mix, mingle and mangia!  Gavala goes on to explain that although this is a cooking class, it is a one-of-a-kind culinary experience with silent auctions, live music and wine flowing.  Guests will receive a commemorative cookbook and an embroidered apron at the event.  But the true star of the show will be the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center itself.

“I’m looking forward to learning from guests and celebrating Italy in a fun, vibrant and dynamic setting,” the Chef adds.  “But it’s that much sweeter that with the event we are supporting the new Eclectic Education Program at the SBDAC.”

Additionally, sponsors of Cooking for the Arts and Ionic and Corinthian-level SBDAC Members receive an invitation to the exclusive VIP reception and cocktail hour in the beautiful, newly renovated Capital Gallery.  This precursor to Cooking for the Arts is a gathering of some of the best names from all walks of Art in Southwest Florida.  An autographed photo of their one-of-a-kind collaborative art offering will be their gift to you.

Mangia Bene!

- Cooking for the Arts will take place on November 1st at 6 pm at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center, located at 2301 First Street in Downtown Fort Myers, FL.  For tickets or more information, please call (239) 333-1933 or visit

SS Hookers
Where fishing tales come to life

SS Hookers

SS Hookers

SS Hookers Restaurant is officially ready to hook up, serve up and have some fun with its grand opening on November 5th!

Paying tribute to the rich history of Punta Rassa — the home of big game fishing — SS Hookers is where fishing tales come to life!  Sitting on a glimmering oasis off the Gulf of Mexico, at the southernmost edge of the Caloosahatchee River, the restaurant is a venture sparked by the historic significance of its location.

The restaurant is Sandra Stilwell’s latest culinary venture, serving up American Cuisine with a Cajun twist for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  The idea is to make SS Hookers a destination spot where before and after a triumphant day of fishing, anglers can have their own catch cooked by the chef.  Whether its snapper, grouper, snook or redfish, this joint will dish up some of the tastiest seafood treats this side of town!

Aside from the restaurant, SS Hookers will also feature a fresh seafood market, bait shop and gift store to round-out the whole experience.

- Join the grand opening and ribbon cutting celebration on November 5, 2014 from 5:30 – 7 pm at SS Hookers, located at 17501 Harbour Pointe Drive in Fort Myers, FL.  For more information, call (239) 466-5377 or visit
